My Photography Then and Now

Exactly one week from now, I will be celebrating my sixth year in digital SLR photography.  It was on February 4, 2010 when I received my very first DSLR – a new Nikon D3000 as a birthday present from my husband and my daughter.  It wasn’t a surprise. I knew I was going to get it because I requested for it.  I had been anxiously waiting for it in the mail.

I owe my introduction to the wonderful world of photography from my brother Alex.  He used to have a SLR camera and shot with it occasionally. During Christmas break of 2014, he brought his new Nikon D3000 camera with him when he came to visit.  I was so curious and kept asking him questions so he let me borrow it.  I remember my very first shot was not good at all. I didn’t know how to make the camera work – I didn’t even know the proper way to hold it.  I didn’t know what all the buttons and dials were for and what the numbers meant.  I didn’t even know how to focus properly even though it was set on auto focus 🙂    But as I kept firing the shutter, I got more and more curious.  I asked my brother if he will give me his new camera, but my pleading didn’t work.

Photo Project Theme Week 33 – Tiny Planets

You’ve probably seen some photos online of weird but interesting looking tiny planets.  This isn’t a new Photoshop project but I thought I’d make some of my own photos into my own Tiny Planets.

To start with, I selected a photo from our family’s recent trip this summer to the Northeast.  The photo that I found that I thought would make a good Tiny Planet was shot in Maryland while we were on the road.  My husband was driving and I was on the passenger seat of our motorhome.

My criteria for selecting this photo are:

  1. Clear sky
  2. Interesting subject
  3. Similar things on each end of the photo – in this example I have trees that are quite similar in height and looks so I can easily blend them together.

As you can see, this is just an ordinary photo, with boring sky, power lines,  and some movement at the bottom since the vehicle was moving fast.  I didn’t even roll down the window when I took this photo.  Nothing exciting here, just a snapshot.

In order to use this for my tiny planet creation, I had to make it into a panorama.  I cropped the top and the bottom of the photo and I also did some minor adjustments to make the colors pop a little.  This is what it looks like after some minor tweaking.

ViewBug Photo Contests

Hey Guys.  Awhile back I joined ViewBug.   This is a photographer’s community where people can join different contests and if you are a paying member you can also sell your photos there.  Members can also award other members and like their photos as well as follow other members.  Well, I uploaded only 16 photos on my free account and tried joining a few contests. My goal was just to have some sort of presence in that community.  I don’t have much time to devote to yet another “social” community as I am already struggling to keep up with Facebook, Twitter, Google+ and Pinterest.

Recently, I received an email from ViewBug saying that one of my photos was automatically entered in the Image of the Year contest because it was at the top 10%.  They said there were over a million photos entered in 266 contests for 2014.  I was very thrilled!

So far, people have been responsive and I have gotten 38 awards and joined 9 contests.   I am asking you to please visit my wall and VOTE for my photos.  The photos you can vote on are at the top of the specific contests.  I’m happy with that as well.  So I just now looked at ViewBug again.  I should have been sharing my photos to my friends and family to get votes for people’s choice –  so here they are.

Please vote and share!  And THANK YOU for your support.

Photo Project Theme Week 30 – Falling for Fall

Fall is my favorite season.  The weather is nice and the colors are beautiful.  I have not seen beautiful fall colors since we moved from Pennsylvania to Texas seven years ago.  So I really miss it.

This year, we were very blessed to be able to go to Oswego, NY to visit my brother-in-law and his wife and enjoy fall once again (even for just a week).   I was so ready to fall for fall once again.  The leaves in the Adirondacks where we were originally planning on visiting past peak  and most of the leaves have fallen but where we stayed, the leaves were just at peak or about to peak so we were there at the right time.   Prior to arrival, the area had 12 gorgeous days but then the wind came and blew a lot of the leaves off  but nevertheless it was still so beautiful.  I loved the crisp fresh air and the smell of pine needles,  the beautiful mix of leaves in shades of red, yellow and orange on the ground, the smell of forest after the rain, the green moss on rocks, and water from rivers, ponds, streams, lakes.  Wow!  Just amazing.   We don’t have this in Texas!

I captured so many photos from this trip that I have not even gone through looking at them all.  But I am so excited to share my photos so I scanned through them and picked one photo taken for each day we were in New York.

Remembering a Dear friend

Exactly two years ago today, Zen – a very special dog that touched many hearts, especially mine, passed away.   I wrote a special tribute to Zen and want to re-share it.

I still remember Zen.  She will always be a part of me.
