Photo Project Theme Week 23 – Artistic Flare

What is lens flare?  According to Wikipedia, it is the light scattered in lens systems through generally unwanted image formation mechanisms.

It is a “non-image forming light” that typically looks like bright streaks,  rings,  circles or polygonal shape which generally reduces the contrast and saturation of the photograph by increasing the exposure without adding any image content.

How can we avoid it?  Usually, we would want to shade the lens from the bright light source that is shining on the lens, whether it be sunlight or artificial light.  By using the lens hood that is usually included when we purchase a lens, flare can be avoided.  If you don’t have a lens hood, you can just shield the lens with your hand or have someone shield it for you.   If no one is there to help you, just reposition yourself so that you can reduce the amount of bright light coming in directly to your lens.  If you are using a zoom lens, sometimes by zooming in to your subject, the impact of light changes and might reduce flare.   And one last thing to remember is you can always recompose your shot.  By positioning an object somehow between the lens and the bright light source, for example a tree or leaves, will reduce or totally eliminate flare.

But do we really want to avoid flare?   Recent trend shows that photographers have been deliberately adding flare to their photographs to add drama or artistic effect.  So, flare is good if used properly.

I love shooting directly into the sun.  I just love the light streaks that the light creates in my photographs.  Here are some of the photographs I took where flare played a positive addition to the photos.

Photo Project Theme Week 21 – Summer

Ahhh ….. summer…   What comes to your mind when you think about summer?  Is it the beach? hiking? school’s out?  pool parties?  Whatever it is, I think summer is synonymous with FUN.

Here in Texas, it’s really hot during summer.  If you are outside, shade is your best friend. Once you’re in the shade though, it’s not too bad especially when the breeze is nice.  A lot of people here go to the swimming holes or go tubing in the rivers to cool off.  For us, we usually stay inside where there’s air conditioning  and when we go on vacation, we usually go somewhere cold during the hottest month which is August.

This year, we didn’t do much. Unfortunately, work has made us so busy.  Although recently we had a chance to spend a weekend with family in Burnet, TX. We had fun and LOTS of great food.  We went kayaking and visited the Longhorn Caverns in Marble Falls.  It was a nice short getaway with family  and we got to bring our dogs.

In just another week, summer break will be over.  Kids will be back in school.  Traffic will be horrible.   But the good thing is cooler days will soon be here.

How about you?  What did  you do this summer?

Photo Project Theme Week 3 – Blessed

This week’s theme is Blessed.    For this theme, I have picked a verse from the Bible from Jeremiah 17:7 which says “But blessed are those who trust in the Lord and have made the Lord their hope and confidence.”

Everyday, I look up in the sky and see the awesome work that the Lord has for us to see and experience.  He’s just so amazing!   I feel very blessed and it gives me hope each day knowing that the Lord is always there for me.

This photo was taken in Breckenridge, CO from Peak 7.
